For redevelopment of George Town in north Chennai, Centre sanctions amount now

City of Chennai could add one more feather to its cap and George Town in Chennai is now making superb piece of news.

For redevelopment of George Town of north Chennai, as a part of pilot local area plan and implementation of pilot town planning scheme at Agaramthen Village (St Thomas panchayat union) under Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation or Amrut, Centre has sanctioned an amount of Rs 2 crores now.

It must be taken into account that 150 hectares in George Town would be redeveloped and town planning scheme would be implemented in 151 hectares of Agaramthen. To start this project, an amount of Rs 40 lakhs was released in the month of September and by March this project would be completed.

The sensational information is under Amrut scheme, Chennai is among 25 cities selected for the above said pilot schemes. As TUFIDCO hasn’t released the funds to CMDA or Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority which is the nodal agency, the funds released by the centre is yet to be used.

It must be noted that based on the Justice Rajeswaran committee’s recommendations to work out guidelines for redeveloping George Town and Triplicane, the implementation of the pilot scheme has started as CMDA has planned to redevelop these places. As per some sources it is clear that more than 60 % of buildings in these places were above 50 years old and they need immediate attention.

It is well known that area in George Town is bounded by Basin Bridge Road on the north, Rajaji Salai on the east, North fort Road and Periyar EVR Salai on the south and Waltax Road on the west.

Point to be noted is area is classified under different land use zones that included primary residential, mixed residential use zones, institutional and industrial use zones.
