Posted on: 19/Nov/2019 10:04:00 AM
It has been a while since NE monsoon has been active in Chennai and this NE monsoon is expected to strengthen in this week.

Many parts of the state of TN including Chennai city are expected to get fairly widespread rainfall through this week. It is now believed that Chennai citys rain deficit problem would be reduced because of the forthcoming rains. The point to be noted is rained might be there till Friday in TN due to trough of easterlies from the equatorial Indian Ocean off south Sri Lanka coast to southwest Bay of Bengal off north TN coast. Till Wednesday, Chennai would have light to moderate rainfall.

Important information is the lull in the monsoon activity in November has pushed the seasonal rainfall to red in 17 districts including Cuddalore, Villupuram, and Vellore. Against the seasonal share of 49 cm of rainfall, Chennai city got 29 cm of rainfall since the 1st of October. By Wednesday, rains would begin in coastal areas and move inland. This was mentioned by Mr. Puviarasan, director of Area Cyclone Warning Centre.

It must be noted that there would be an increased in the rainfall on Wednesday and 76-100% weather stations would get rainfall. Some places received moderate rains in the last 24 hours of time that ended at 8:30 am on Monday.

On Tuesday, one or two places in few districts including Dharmapuri, Ramanathapuram, and Tirunelveli might record heavy rain up to 12cm. On Wednesday, districts like Cuddalore, Thanjavur, and Villupuram might get isolated heavy rains. Against an average of 30 cm for the season, TN has received 27 cm of rainfall till now.

The point is a shortfall of 7% is regarded as normal by the meteorological department. It is worthy to note that in the past rain deficit in November has been compensated by the rains in December though November is regarded as the wettest month.
