Northeast Monsoon rainy season commences on 17th October

The southwest monsoon rainy season, which brought copious rains to the State of Tamil Nadu parched for water over the past 4 months, comes to a close today (Wednesday, 6th October).

The main water source for the state of Tamil Nadu, the northeast monsoon rainy season is set to commence tomorrow (Thursday, 16th October).

The Chennai Meteorological Centre has expressed confidence that the average rainfall of 44 cm will happen with heavy rains in several districts.

The Chennai Meteorological Centre has confirmed that the northeast monsoon rainy season is all set to commence on 17th October, Thursday (tomorrow).

The precursor rain announcing the commencement of the northeast monsoon rainy season was experienced throughout Tamil Nadu yesterday, Tuesday, 15th October.

There was widespread rain in the southern and western districts of Tamil Nadu state including Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Virudhunagar, Dindigul, Theni, Coimbatore, Nilgiri, and Erode.

As at 8.30 AM yesterday, over the last 24 hours, a maximum rainfall of 8 cm was registered in Srivaikuntam, Thoothukudi district. Chennai Meteorological Centre has informed us that the rain will continue today (16th October) as well.

The Director of the Chennai Meteorological Center Puviyarasan shared in this regard:

‘The Southwest monsoon season is drawn to a close in most parts of the Indian Ocean. It may close completely today. Subsequently, the northeast monsoon rainy season is set to commence.

The northeast monsoon season’s rains will start in Tamil Nadu and the adjacent areas such as south Andhra, Rayalaseema, south Karnataka, and Kerala.

As for today, there are prospects of rain in several places in the north and south districts of Tamil Nadu. There are prospects of mild rain in other areas.

There are prospects of sudden rains with thunder in the Chennai and surrounding districts.

Cyclonic winds may blow in the ocean areas of Mannar Bay, Kanyakumari Ocean, Lakshadweep, and the Maldives at a speed of 45 to 55 kmph.
