The sensational upward revision for new electric connections - Rs. 6400!

The Central Electricity Regulatory Commission has raised the charges related to new low-tension, residential, single-phase connections and others from the present Rs. 1600 to Rs. 6400.
TANGEDCO collects charges known as �Palvagai� (plural - multiple) for giving new low-tension electricity connections. The charge covers various services such as a new electricity connection, installing the energy meter, registration charges, development charges, and a deposit. This is a `one-time� payment.
After the connection is given, the electricity consumption charges are billed once in 2 months. The Central Electricity Regulatory Commission has the authority to revise the electricity charges. Accordingly, a petition was submitted by TANGEDCO to the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission to increase the above multiple charges.
In this regard, the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission conducted a meeting to ascertain the public opinion/suggestions on 25th September at Chennai T Nagar.
By-elections are being conducted in the Legislative Assembly Constituencies of Vikravandi (Villupuram district) and Nanguneri (Tirunelveli district) on 21st October.
It was planned to announce the upward revision in the multiple charges once the election had been conducted.

Subsequently, the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission has ordered the upward revision of the multiple charges for new electricity connections.
The revised charges will be effective from today (Saturday, 5th October).
