Increase in the groundwater table in all the zones except zone 10 in Chennai

Chennai city received rains in the month of June and intermittent rains in the month of July. The rains have increased the levels of groundwater in as many as 14 zones in Chennai. It is important to mention here that zone 10 (Kodambakkam) is the only zone that recorded shortfall in the groundwater levels. This was confirmed by some officials belonging to the metro water department or MWD.

The superb information collected is Anna Nagar zone topped the list in the ground water table and showed an improvement of 1.19 m followed by Perungudi that showed an increase in 1.16 m.

It must be noted that Sholinganallur zone was third in the groundwater table list and it showed an increase in the water level by 0.97 m.  It was later mentioned by an official belonging to MWD that in zone 10 or Kodambakkam the water level had gone down by 0.06 m when compared to June moth when it was 8.31 m. The ground water table improved because of the rains received in the month of June and 230 mm of rains was received in June. This was per the officials.

Recharging the groundwater levels was done by the subsequent intermittent rains in Chennai. It was revealed that the groundwater table have increased by 0.49 m on an average and it was a good sign. There are many apartment complexes and resident welfare associations opting for recharge wells and the results would be better in the upcoming months.

In the Chennai city, many places were worst affected in March as the ground water table went down when compared to the last year. These places were West Mambalam, Nungamnbakkam, T. Nagar, Rpyapettah, Triplicane, Ambattur, Avadi, Tambaram, Pallavaram. Alandur, Madipakkam, Adambakkam, Ullagaram, Puzhuthivakkam etc. It is brought out that water levels that were 150 ft to 200 ft went down to 400 ft in most places in Chennai.
