According to an official belonging to the Chennai Corporation, the main objective of restoring Mambalam Canal was to make it a place of recreation. He then explained about how foot path would be set up along the entire stretch and by this people could start at one end of the canal and could go to the other end. Space on the banks would play a huge role in determining the presence of parks and recreational facilities.

Information collected is Mambalam Canal is one of the 15 canals in the Chennai city maintained by the corporation. Near the famous Valluvar Kottam this canal begins and passes through T. Nagar and CIT Nagar before draining into Adyar River along with Nandanam canal near the Nandanam golf course.

Detailed Project Report or DPR prepared by the WAPCOS does not account for the development purposes along the canal and it has to be fine tuned. This was per a senior corporation official. He later spoke about how once the DPR is modified then the proposal would be sent to the government for approval. He hinted that the project would be taken up by this 2019.

It is worthy to note that indigenous trees like vilvam, neem etc would be planted along the stretch. At 2 places, parks with recreational facilities would come up. The official highlighted about the bridges that would be built on the stretches where the canal is narrow and has no space on the banks.

Information is this Mambalam Canal has got garbage dumped at many places and it needs proper cleaning now. The canal was initially designed to carry flood water is known. To treat waste water from the houses, sewage treatment plants would be set up. Garbage dumping could be prevented by fencing along the canal. This was later confirmed by the senior official.

It was pointed out by Mr. L. Nandakumar, corporation chief engineer that when the project gets over then it would be the best water front development in the Chennai city.
