Buildings in Chennai to be marked with stickers for installation of RWH structures

Posted on: 29/Jul/2019 10:16:33 AM
Dont be surprised when you see blue or green sticker on your compound wall. The information is if the building has any of these stickers then the building is said to have installed rain water harvesting structures or RWH structures. For the sake of demarcating the complaint ones with others, the corporation has now started colour coding the buildings.

It must be taken into account that 1.4lakhs independent houses and apartment complexes have been examined for the installation of RWH structures. Point is as many as 41000 did not have RWH in them. On those buildings that have RWH structures, the corporation of Chennai has put blue stickers now. Green stickers would be given for those buildings that install RWH after the recent inspections.

According to an official belonging to the corporation it is clear that these stickers would be of huge help in identifying buildings with old or new RWH. He said that till now no colour has been given to those non-complying buildings. He concluded that the team would campaign to get the buildings on board. It was brought out that the drive started on Saturday and there is a target of making two lakh homes RWH complaint. By this colour coding, the progress would be known and finally the target would be achieved. Point to be noted for those buildings not having RWH structures technical advice would be given and residents associations would be used to spread awareness.

The corporation of Chennai just month back announced 200 ward level committees each with a target of setting up RWH structures in 1000 homes by the end of October.  In the city of Chennai there are as many as 12.5 lakhs (residential and commercial) and the residential buildings would be the ward committees immediate target. This was according to the civic body.

It must be taken into account that each ward committee has got assistant engineers, joint engineers from the city corporation, metro water, corporation tax collector and a sanitary inspector. It is revealed that the functioning of the committee would be done by the deputy commissioners and regional deputy commissioners belonging to the Chennai Corporation. Till now, 142,396 buildings have been surveyed by the ward teams and out of those as many as 77, 975 buildings have functional RWH structures.

It has been found by the survey that as many as 23,146 buildings have got RWH structures maintained poorly and they required refurbishment. It is important to note that 41,275 buildings do not have RWH structures installed in them. Just 3 days back, Mr. S.P. Velumani, minster for municipal administration and water supply issued statement appealing to all the citizens to install RWH structures in their houses is known.
