From 15 new locations in Chennai, renting bicycles would be possible soon

On 28th February 2019, the chief minister of TN, Mr. E. Palaniswami, inaugurated the bicycle sharing system in Chennai.  This bicycle sharing system is operating in Anna Nagar, Shenoy Nagar and in the Marina Beach areas is known. It must be taken into account that presently the corporation operates a fleet of 250 bicycles in Chennai.

Soon, G.N. Chetty Road, MRTS stations belonging to places like Thiruvanmiyur, Indra Nagar, Kasthuribai Nagar etc would have bicycle sharing system as this system would be expanded to 15 new locations in the Chennai city. Information collected is this expansion to 15 new locations would be completed in another 2 weeks of time. To its already existing fleet of 250 smart bikes, the civic corporation would be adding another 150 smart bikes soon.

It was pointed out by some corporation officials that Kilpauk, Egmore, Nehru Park, AGDMS, Teynampet metro stations would also get cycle sharing system. By this, the last mile connectivity would be improved. This was later confirmed by an official belonging to the corporation. He also brought out that approval for another 10 locations has been pending and once it is approved then 100 more bicycle would be added.

It has been revealed by some sources that electric cycles would also be added to the fleet. If this becomes true, then Chennai would become the first cycle sharing system in India to have electric cycles included in its fleet. By the end of the month of August, Chennai would get 250 electric cycles in addition to the regular bicycles. By September end, anther 250 bicycles might be added.

It is interesting to mention that electric bicycles also need riders to pedal them. For propulsion, these electric bicycles have electric motors of varying capacity. Information is electric cycles could operate at a speed of 25 to 32 km ph.

From 1st April to 5th May, bicycle sharing system had recorded 12,728 rentals and this was according to the date available with the Chennai city corporation. From the residents, the civic body has received as many as 3361 registrations in this above said time period.
