People especially women/girls face many problems these days from sexual offenders as well as from cyber criminals. This news would bring some relief for them now.

Information that has come out is these sexual offenders and cyber criminals could be detained by the TN police personnel under the Goondas Act. Up to one year, the above mentioned sexual offenders and cyber criminals could be locked up without trial.

The point is Goondas Act has been amended to include such criminals and this was as per the chief minister of TN, Mr. E. Palaniswami. It should be taken into account that till now the Goondas Act was used against bootleggers, drug peddlers, poachers, goons, pimps, sand smugglers, slum lords, video piracy racketeers etc. Important information is the suspects could appeal within 3 months of their detention. It was mentioned by Mr. Kannadasan, former special public prosecutor for human right cases and senior counsel that the move would not be a barrier for committing the crimes.

He spoke about how in many cases the Madras High Court had slammed hard police personnel for their excess. Information is the investigation officers could conduct their investigations and file charge sheet in the case. Mr. Kannadasan was unhappy about the Goondas Act that is invoked to prevent suspects from committing more crimes. He revealed that those persons who were detained under this act were repeat offenders.

Mr. Arulraj, a former magistrate, was happy about this new move and said that it could be strong deterrent against sexual offenders and cyber criminals. He revealed that if the criminals are not detained under the rule then they are entitled to get bail through certain reasons accepted by the courts. Finally, he spoke about how this newly amended act would make sure that the criminals cannot leave the jail for one year.
