The amount of water drawn from the Veeranam Lake has been reduced now

Water is being drawn now from the Veeranam Lake that is present in the Cuddalore district in TN is well known. This has resulted in the water getting depleted. The latest news is the officials have reduced the amount of water drawn from the lake in order to cope up with the fast depleting water at this lake.

A senior official belonging to the metro water department expressed his views and spoke about how till the month of May metro water was drawing up to 180 million litres a day or mld and how this has been reduced to just 90 mld in the last month. Veeranam Lake has been the Chennai city�s one of the major water resources and it has got a total capacity of 1465 mcft. It is worthy to note that on Saturday 293 mcft of water was present in this lake and it is now revealed that this water could be sustained for another 20 days.

In the month of September and in April, Veeranam received water twice from Mettur and this was in the last 10 months. Point is because of the water received the lake was filled to the brim in this time period. Chennai city has been affected by severe water crisis now and 70 percent of Chennai city�s water demand has been satisfied by Veeranam Lake.

An official belonging to the metro water department explained how Veeranam Lake has been playing a huge role in solving the water issue in the Chennai now and how without Veeranam Lake the water situation in Chennai would have been worse. He added that the water from Mettur had filled the Veeranam Lake twice.

Information is currently metro water supplies 495 mld of water to Chennai through various sources. On Mondays, Wednesdays and on Fridays, water is supplied on alternate days to those within the Chennai city limits. Water is supplied just once in 3 or 4 days in suburban places of Chennai.

It is important to note that for supplying water to the Chennai metro water draws 90 mld of water from Veeranam, 30 mld of water from NLC, 30 mld from aquifers in Neyveli, 30 mld from Paravanar river basin, combined 180 mld from the desalination plants located in Minjur and Nemmeli, 100 mld from farm wells belonging to Ponneri and Minjur. In addition to these mentioned, 20 mld water is drawn from the Sikkarayapuram quarries and 35 mld from underground water sources.
