In the last one week, GCC collects Rs 18 lakhs from those who violated plastic ban

The news that has come out now is GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation has collected an amount of Rs 18.15 lakhs from those who violated the plastic ban. This amount was collected by GCC in the last one week of time. It must be noted that 9194 kg of banned plastic items has been seized by the officials belonging to the GCC from storing, transporting and from selling them.
The important zones like Royapuram and Kodambakkam zones in Chennai represented the highest seizures of banned plastic items. Parry’s is the hub of plastic trade in Chennai city and from here 5800 kg of plastic products were seized by the GCC officials. It is known that last Thursday, the official seized banned plastic cups and plates being transported to Parry’s from Puducherry and impounded 2.15 tonnes of plastic goods worth Rs 15 lakhs. It was pointed out by some traders that plastic was easily available even though commercial wholesale and retail activity has come down.
The plastic items were sold openly and the business has been secretly going on in the popular Anderson Street in Broadway. Information is GCC has been conducting raids and penalising those who have been involved in the banned plastics products selling business. A plastic trader belonging to Anderson Street spoke about how small vendors are demanding plastic products due to the lack of cheap alternatives. He added that the compostable bags were not preferred as they were costly.
Information collected is banned plastic products have been used by the food delivery aggregators in Chennai. A resident belonging to T. Nagar spoke about how plastic spoons, straws and containers were sent along with the food orders and this despite of requesting food delivery aggregators not to send them. It was mentioned by some small vendors that they do not have other options now. They were of the view that if the customers carry their own containers then there would not be any necessity of using banned plastic items by them. It should be taken into account that fruit, food and beverage vendors still use banned plastic bags as they operate on tight budgets plus do not have other options.
Apart from levying penalties on those who have been using banned plastic items, GCC are also involved in sensitizing small vendors to stop using plastic items. An official then threw light on how the food vendors in many places in Chennai use plastic bags and banned disposable plates at the night time.
