A 2nd desalination plant is to be set up in Nemmeli located near Chennai. 15 Crores Litres of water will be desalinated daily. The foundation stone for this project will be laid by the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister E. Palanisamy tomorrow (Thursday, 27th June).

A long-range outlook plan of setting up a desalination plant was announced in the year 2003-2004 in order to overcome the acute water shortage and drought conditions in Chennai Metro city.

Accordingly, 2 desalination plants were set up Kattuppalli in Minjur and Nemmeli in East Coast Road  -and these plants have been supplying 10 Crores litres of water every day for distribution to the Chennai Metro City residents. These 2 desalination plants meet 30% of the demand of Chennai.

As the monsoon seasonal rainfalls had failed for the last 2 years, the water levels of the 4 major water reservoirs supplying water to the Chennai Metro City Poondi, Chozhavaram, Chembarambakkam, and the Red Hills had not risen and the reservoirs have gone dry!

So, a decision was taken to set up an additional desalination plant at Nemmeli. The capacity of this plant will be 15 Crores litres of water every day.

The officials of the Chennai Metro Water Supply and Sewage Board (CMWSSB) informed in this regard:

It has been arduous task and a challenge to cater to the demands for water in the Chennai Metro City with its rapidly growing population and failure of the monsoon rainy season. Subsequently, a decision has been taken to set up a 2nd desalination plant at Nemmeli in 10.5-acre empty land.

The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister E. Palanisamy will be laying the foundation stone for this project at 10.30 AM on Thursday, 27th June. The desalination plant will start functioning in 2 years. With this, 15 Crores litres of drinking water can be supplied/distributed daily to the Chennai Metro City residents.
