Every day many accidents take place on the roads and people lose their precious lives or get severely injured etc. Hence wearing helmets is very important for those driving 2 wheelers. It should be noted that the Madras High Court had ordered riders/ drivers as well as pillion riders of 2 wheelers to wear helmets. The point is following this order by HC the helmet rule is being strictly enforced by the traffic police on both drivers and pillion riders in Chennai city now.
The sensational piece of news that has come out is atleast 3000 cases are booked by the traffic police everyday in Chennai against the riders/ drivers of 2 wheelers for disobeying the helmet rule. It was mentioned by a traffic police that atleast 700 to 800 challans were issued against the pillion riders for not wearing helmets.
It is now revealed that now 300 police officers belonging to the ranks of sub-inspector, inspector and assistant commissioner of police are posted at the road corners to keep an eye on those who do not wear helmets. The motorists are fined Rs 100 on the spot is known. It was pointed out by a senior police officer that all officers were being instructed regularly over VHF so that strict enforcement of the helmet rule is followed. Information collected is between 1st July 2015 and 3rd June 2019 as many as 1875916 cases have been booked by the traffic police in Chennai city. The helmet rule was enforced and people were fined from 16th August 2018 onwards is known.
It must be noted that the CCTV cameras have been playing their roles in booking the cases against those who do not follow helmet rule. The police until the end of May Month have booked as many as 14072 cases against the motorists. Here the contact less enforcement system has been utilized by the traffic police. By means of post also, challans have been sent to 8299 erring motorists.
The traffic police personnel are doing their best in creating more awareness in wearing helmets while driving two wheelers. It is said that erring motorists have been stopped at many vantage points and awareness videos were screened for them. Another effort taken by the traffic policemen is the distribution of pamphlets. At places having large number of people such as schools and colleges etc awareness programmes about road safety and wearing helmets are conducted regularly by the traffic police personnel.
