The summer vacations for the students and teachers in TN would be ending soon. The point to be noted is beginning from the second week of the month of June, orientation on the new syllabus for the teachers would start. This has been planned by the school education department.

It is important to mention that the revamped syllabus was implemented for classes 1, 6, 9 and 11 from the academic year 2018-19. From this year onwards, all other classes would have new syllabus.

It was pointed out by an official who is involved in overseeing of syllabus revamp that the textbooks would be colourful and engaging. He explained how the department has considered the feedback got about the length of the textbooks and to make it concise, steps have been taken. For the subjects like Botany and Zoology for class 12, single volume books have been introduced.

The important piece of information is enough care has been taken to make sure that textbooks for many subjects did not go beyond 368 pages so that neither students nor teachers are affected by the lengthy portions. This would be specifically for the classes like 10 and 12.

First priority would be given to those teachers who would be handling classes like 10 and 12 as these classes have got board examinations at the end of the year. This was confirmed by some officials belonging to the State Council for Educational Research or SCERT.

It is now brought out that for 3 key resources persons for each subject would be selected and trained from each district. This would be for the initial training. Official belonging to SCERT spoke about how these persons would be encouraged to conduct orientation programmes with teachers in their districts. To plan how the orientation as well as training to be structured, SCERT would be holding a meeting involving textbook writing committee.

President of TN Teachers Association, Mr. P.K. Illamaran, expressed his views and spoke about the revamped syllabus. He hinted that the orientation must focus more on how the teachers could adapt /use ICT components like QR codes and linked online content given in the textbooks to their classrooms etc.
