Posted on: 23/Apr/2019 10:14:04 AM
Couple of months back the metro water tankers in Chennai were fitted with GPS. It is revealed that the authorities of the metro water department have not started tracking the tankers even now. As a result of this some metro water tankers have been selling water that was meant free supply to private tankers. This has caught the attention of many. According to a contractor belonging to Chennai Central area it is clear that the private tankers do not function during the day time. It is well known that metro water supplies water in most areas in Chennai.

A contractor expressed his thoughts and spoke about how there are few places in Chennai such as Ashok Nagar and Nungambakkam where the private tankers wait near the filling stations in the morning. The shocking piece of information is few metro tankers after getting filled with water come to the nearby lane and the water is transferred to private tankers. He further added that GPS usage could prevent such illegal movements. There is more demand for the drinking water now and low price has been offered by the metro water. These have led to such illegal activities mentioned above.

It is important to note that the price for metro water tanker with 6000 litres capacity is Rs 475. For the metro water tanker with 9000 litres capacity, the price is Rs 700. The amount of Rs 1200 is the price for tanker with 16000 litres capacity. The point is private tankers that supply water to the newly added areas in Chennai charge Rs 1000 for 12000 litres, Rs 2000 for 24000 litres and Rs 2750 for 36000 litres. Many households do not have sumps to fill 12,000 litres of water. Taking this to their advantage, many private tankers buy water in less quantities and supply to houses at higher rates.

It was pointed out by a senior official belonging to the metro water department that GPS was not used to keep an eye on the movement of the tankers. He shed light on how the authorities conduct surprise checks. He finally revealed that penalties were imposed on those who violate the rules.
