Renovation of jails in TN as government gives its approval

It is known that the prisons department had sent a proposal regarding renovation of jails in the state of Tamil Nadu. The latest news is the state government had acknowledged this proposal of renovation of the jails and an amount of Rs 12.40 crores would be spent on the renovation purpose.

It is now said that by this renovation the prisoners in the state of TN would soon get better sanitation facilities like western closets and piped water etc. The important information is this proposal was sent by the inspector of prisons as per the orders of Madras High Court and it is likely to be approved by the government.

It must be taken into account that a division bench comprising Justice S. Manikumar and Justice Subramonium Prasad passed interim orders on a suo motu plea that sought direction to the state so that the kin of the prisoners who passed away during imprisonment were provided with due compensation.

The nine central prisons located in places like Puzhal, Vellore, Cuddalore, Salem, Trichy, Madurai, Palayamkottai and Coimbatore would be renovated initially. Later on other prisons would also be renovated. The point is presently the employees of Chennai Corporation were utilized for the sanitation works and steps would be taken up to fill the vacancies as fast as possible. As per the additional government pleader it is clear that the 35 posts in the prisons department namely chief head warder and grade 1 and 2 warders have been filled up.

The Supreme Court’s order directed all the high court’s to initiate the plea to make sure that the kin of the prisoners who died during the imprisonment were duly compensated is known. Now this had made the High Court to initiate the suo motu plea.

It is now revealed that the central prisons in Puzhal would get an amount of Rs 1.30 crores for renovation. It would be Rs 64.60 lakhs for Vellore, Rs 56.41 lakhs for Cuddalore, Rs 1.31 crores for central prison in Salem, Rs 2.95 crores for Trichy, Rs 50.51 cr for special prison for women in Trichy, Rs 1.17 crores for Madurai, Rs 1.52 crores for Palayamkottai and Rs 2.4 crores for Coimbatore.
