There are many heritage structures in Chennai city. Few examples are Central railway station, GPO, Madras High Court, Chepauk Palace etc. The Egmore Metropolitan Magistrate Court is also one such heritage structure that was built some 100 years ago in Indo-Saracenic style.

The latest news is this heritage building of Egmore would have a new amazing look soon. Built in the British regime, Egmore Metropolitan Magistrate Court has been undergoing renovation for the last 2 years is known. The last stages of renovation are going on now. The point is the artisans have spent nearly 2 years renovating this heritage building in Chennai. Egmore court is one of the oldest courts in Chennai city is well known.

This court was built with grand arches, timber staircases and deep rosewood was used for making doors and windows. The total beauty of Egmore court was lost as the grime or dirt took over the building. It would be surprising to note that Egmore court was one of the busiest campuses in Chennai city and many courts functioned in the 2 storey building. The building has got 15 to 18 rooms and the total area was 18000 square feet.

It was in the month of August in the year 2015 the courts were shifted temporarily to Allikulam for renovation of the heritage building. In December in 2018, the courts were again shifted to a 5 storey building in the same compound.

Historian Mr. V. Sriram spoke his heart out on certain things. He spoke about how the building is atleast more than 100 years old and how the first building in the place was actually meant for the Presidency College. He further explained about how in the year 1841 a preparatory school was built in this place for Presidency College and the classes took place.

Mr. Sriram finally threw light on how the place was known as De Monte House and this was until a permanent campus of the Presidency College was built in 1855 on the Marina Beach Road. Three Municipal Magistrate Courts were established in Chennai city by the Britishers at places like Egmore, Saidapet and Georgetown in the year 1916 and thee buildings are still functional.

The renovation of Egmore Metropolitan Magistrate Court has been carried out by PWD is known. It was pointed out by a senior official of PWD that the restoration work has been done in consultation with the National Centre for Safety of Heritage Structures.
