Onions and garlics keep you protected from cancer, study

The intense flavors of onions and garlic make the two too predominantly used in Indian cuisine. According to a latest study on the two, it is understood that they help in preventing cancer.

The study stated that garlic, garlic stalks, onions, spring onions, leek, etc. are among the mostly consumed vegetables across the world. In these vegetables, there are bioactive compounds including flavanols and organosulfur compounds. These are said to fight against carcinogenesis.

First Hospital of China Medical University scientists have got their study results published on Asia-Pacific Journal of Clinical Oncology. They tried to comprehend with these vegetables in the aspect of preventing one from colorectal cancer or CRC.

Studies conducted earlier in this field have analyzed the usefulness of these vegetables in bringing down the risk of blood cancer. A few of these studies claim that these vegetables bring down the risk of blood cancer.

The way in which data collection is done is the main reason for variation in results. For example, a few studies make a holistic analysis of all these allium vegetables considered as a single group while the other type of analysis does not consider all of these allium vegetables. Having this in mind, these researchers have precisely captured the way in which allium vegetables have reduced colorectal cancer risk.

For this research, the scientists have considered 833 individuals all of whom are suffering out of colorectal cancer. And there were 833 patients under control without the ailment. All of these individuals has same sex, location and age group. Interviews were conducted for each of them separately. And their diet habits were individually noted with the help of food frequency questionnaire.

Allium vegetable consumption and the likeliness of developing colorectal cancer were largely related to each other. In particular, individuals who had very high levels of allium vegetables had lesser risk of getting colorectal cancer by up to 79 percent as compared to the others who had very less level of allium vegetables.

There is in fact a trend. With greater consumption of vegetables, there is better protection against cancer, say authorities.

The basic level of prevention against CRC is deeply studied. This prevention is via lifestyle intervention. Furthermore exploration on this topic is necessary in this vertical, say experts.
