Are Metro train tickets high priced? CMRL explains

There was a recent article published about the Chennai Metro Rail fares stating it to be unfair charging. The Chennai Metro Rail, giving a reply to this article that got viral has clarified that they charge Rs 2.5 per kilometer as the average fare. This is lower when compared to that of Mumbai or Bengaluru metro fares.
According to CMRL spokesman, considering the metro fares of the first 24km, when the fares of Chennai is compared with that of other metros, the metro fare at Delhi is the lowest as it charges Rs 50 and the cost of Chennai and Bengaluru metros are of the range Rs 60. In Mumbai, the fare of first 24km is Rs 84 which is the highest among all the metros, says CMRL.
When compared with the first-class ticket rate as in suburban train, CMRL says the fare is on the higher side. While the rate of first class suburban train ticket is Rs 93 which along with GST counts to Rs 100, the CMRL fare is just Rs 60 which also gives you air-conditioned journey and more of other facilities such as escalators.
When compared to the rates of first class train tickets in suburban trains, the rates of Chennai metro rail is lesser, CMRL points.
Furthermore, the Chennai Metro officials also state that they have got non-fare box schemes which are getting into contract with sole advertising rights to advertise at cafeteria and train and metro stations. One such shop is closed and a new model is upcoming as there were personal problems in its partnership.
There are many establishments as locker facilities. At the St. Thomas Mount, OT, and Thirumangalam metro stations, there is Forex currency exchange facility as per the non-fare box revenue models which is a clear indication of increase in commercial establishments across Chennai metro stations.
