Posted on: 06/Mar/2013 4:52:42 PM
The Central Bureau of Investigation in its surprise raids conducted at various mineral-water manufacturing companies, it was detected that about 250 mineral companies did not obtain licences from the Bureau of Indian Standards. The investigation also revealed that the water filled-in several containers are directly tapped from  big water tanks, which were also not maintained hygienically , it is learnt.

To start a mineral-water company like this not much investment is needed, say many.

Of late, one could see a lot of mineral water bottles with different names have come up and are sold in some railway stations and bus stands to passengers. Some companies sell water in polyethylene packets. Companies like this have sprung up in Chennai and some in suburban areas like Kancheepuram, Thiruvallur, it is learnt.

Many buyers say that the cheap mineral water contained some deadly insects including cockroaches and ants.

To start a mineral water manufacturing company the Government Of India has fixed 25 conditions with a set of rules and regulations. The manufacturers should follow at least 20 of its conditions.

The manufacturer should employ scientifically qualified persons for its laboratories and R&D wing is one of the conditions, but there was no such appointment made in these bogus companies

A fraction of daily wagers are appointed in these companies to do the job of uploading and loading the mineral-water bottles in crates for transportation.
The companies also paste bogus labels stating that the total quantity, manufacturing date and certified by the BIS.

The CBI has submitted its reports to the Central Government.Based on it, it is hoped, that proper steps would be taken against them, it is said.
