Rain in Tamil Nadu to reduce, revival after Northeast Monsoon sets in

Posted on: 23/Oct/2018 6:33:37 PM
The rapid withdrawal of Southeast Monsoon and slight delay in onset of the Northeast Monsoon has resulted in deficient rains for the month of October countrywide.

As of October 23, the country is 49% rain deficient. However, among all the regions the southern states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala have performed the best rainfall wise. In fact, both these states at present are largely rain surplus by 19% and 36%, respectively.

Since the last three days, rainfall activity over the entire state of Tamil Nadu has reduced significantly, as only light to moderate rains are being observed. In fact, during the last 24 hours also, light rains with isolated moderate showers was observed in Tamil Nadu.

In the last 24 hours from 08:30 am on Monday, Palayankottai recorded 33 mm of rain, followed by Kodaikanal 12 mm, Karaikal 2.3 mm, Thondi 2.2 mm, Pamban 6 mm and Tiruchirapalli 1.6 mm.

Now further during the coming three days, we expect rains to vacate from the northern and interior parts of Tamil Nadu. Meanwhile, only isolated pockets of south coastal Tamil Nadu may receive light to moderate rainfall activity.

Further, as we expect Northeast Monsoon to mark its onset on October 26, rains will also once again commence over the state during that time. Thus, we can say that good rains are in site for Tamil Nadu during this weekend.
