In Guindy, SIDCO parking regulation efforts are not successful

Posted on: 20/Oct/2018 10:04:47 AM
One of the most important localities in the city of Chennai is Guindy. The parking of trucks and heavy vehicles has been an issue in Guindy for a long time. It is well known that SIDCO or Small Industries Development Corporation is the nodal agency that maintains the industrial estate regions. To regulate the parking, SIDCO has given nod to a Bengaluru based agency and the parking was supposed to be implemented from 15th of October 2018. It was said that those parking their trucks and other heavy vehicles in haphazard way in the Guindy Industrial Estate would be punished. This has not happen still.

A senior official belonging to SIDCO explained how separate space was allotted in the Guindy estate so that truck drivers and owners could park their vehicles and how the agency would collect minimum amount for this parking. He then added that heavy vehicles that were used to ferry good to the small scale industries in the industrial estate did not have any allotted space. Hence they park their vehicles on the roads as a result of this parking the traffic gets blocked.

It must be taken into account that Poomagal Main Road, Parthasarathy Koil Street and the lane behind Olympia Tech Park are among the few roads in which the trucks are stationed.

A motorist spoke about how haphazard parking of vehicles had resulted in reduction in the size of the roads and how this is creating issues. There were also few complaints about the misbehaviour of the drivers towards the pedestrians. A resident belonging to Poomagal Main Road expressed her thoughts and spoke about how SIDCO does not bother about the waste management and about the absence of street lights. The heavy vehicles continued to be parked in the localities nearby. This has raised the question regarding implementation of the parking regulation project.

A driver spoke about the presence of many empty plots in the Guindy industrial estate that were used as garbage dumping area. He then revealed that the solution for the issue has not yet reached them. There is no information available about the parking fees and tenure details.
