Will Northeast monsoon season commence today?

Posted on: 08/Oct/2018 1:19:05 PM
Quiote contrary to the Red Alert issued by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on 7th October (yesterday), the day was rather hot right through the day! Meanwhile, the meteorological centre had also announced that the northeast monsoon rainy season is likely to commence today (Monday, 8th October).

As the peak part before the conclusion of the southwest monsoon rainy season, a low-pressure zone was formed over the Arabian Sea towards the west of Kanyakumari, This intensified and formed into a deep depression zone yesterday (7th October).  It is set to change into a cyclone format. It has been named ‘Lupan’ as given by the country Oman. It is estimated that this cyclone will affect coastal Oman in the next 5 days. During this period, the cyclonic winds will blow at speeds of up to 40 kmph. The sea will be turbulent. So, the fishermen have been warned not to venture into the sea until 12th October.

It has also been informed that this cyclone is not likely to cause any harm to Tamil Nadu and Kerala regions.

Quite contrary to the Red Alert and Orange Alert given by IMD for the 7th October (Sunday), on some districts, it remained hot through the day. It is worth noting that following this Red Alert, there were wild threatening and panic-creating information circulating around in the social media networks as well as WhatsApp. As all of it turned out to be a damp squib, it was a great relief to the public!

In this scenario, it is also expected that the southwest monsoon season would conclude today and the northeast monsoon rainy season would commence today (Monday, 8th October).

A low-pressure zone has formed over the central southeast region of Bay of Bengal. IMD has estimated that this would intensify in 3 days and would cross the coast in the state of Odisha.

The fishermen have been warned not to venture into the sea in the central southeast region over the Bay of Bengal and Andaman until tomorrow (9th October).
