Wait for Chennai rains for some more time, weather to remain dry and warm

Posted on: 19/Jul/2018 7:15:40 PM
The weather over the city of Chennai remained typically dry since the last one month. Still, there was couple of instances when the region saw good spells, one on July 2 reporting 60 mm of rains and the other on July 10 with 28 mm.

Even now, we do not anticipate any significant weather activity over Chennai in the approaching days. This could be attributed to the absence of any major weather system over and around the region that could carry some good rains.

Generally, the Tamil Nadu capital observes rain during Southwest Monsoon only when a cyclonic circulation or low pressure area or a cyclone initiates over South Central Bay of Bengal. At this juncture, a low pressure area is most likely to form but in North Bay of Bengal. So, Chennai as well as some other major parts of Tamil Nadu will continue to see dry and warm weather conditions.

Usually Chennai and most parts of Tamil Nadu receive not as much of rain during Southwest Monsoon as compared to the Northeast Monsoon. The reason being, major portion of the state falls in the rain shadow area.

As on July 19, the state of Tamil Nadu stands rain surplus by 23% and Chennai has received 2% near the normal rains. Moreover, Chennai has reported 105.6 mm of rainfall as against the monthly average rainfall of 103.8 mm. It is obvious that the city has already exceeded its monthly mean even being in the rain shadow area.
