Three students from government schools in TN got MBBS seats in the first phase counselling

The first phase of MBBS counselling took place and the news that has come out now is just three students belonging to the government schools in Tamil Nadu got MBBS seats. There are as many as 2447 seats in 22 medical colleges in TN are known. It is worthy to mention here that 4 students from government schools got MBBS government quota seats in private medical colleges. The total number of students from government schools to get MBBS seats is seven in this 2018. This is higher than the five students of government schools who got MBBS seats in the last year.
The selection committee secretary, Mr. G. Selvarajan, spoke about how total of 20 students, 7 from government schools and 12 from government aided schools got MBBS seats in 2018. One important point to note is the fees in the government medical colleges is Rs 13,600 and the fees for government quota in the private medical colleges is around Rs 3.5 lakh to RS 4 Lakh.
It is now compulsory that the students have to pass NEET to get admitted to medical colleges. The TN state government spent crores of rupees on the NEET coaching last year is known to us. Inspite of this the students belonging to the government schools have found it difficult to get good marks in NEET. It is now clear that NEET is proving to be a huge barrier for the government school students in getting MBBS seats in medical colleges.
In this year 2018, as many as 9154 students from government and government aided schools took NEET. Just 1344 students got qualified in this NEET with 10 students scoring above 300 marks and 42 students getting above 200 marks. Earlier it was predicted that only few students from government schools would get MBBS seats.
Chennai based K.C. Sankaralinga Nadar Higher Secondary School has grabbed the attention of many now. A student from this government aided school got amazing 416 marks in the NEET and he topped with 972nd rank. Now he has got MBBS seat in Vellore Medical College.
According to Mr. Prince Gajendrababu who is the general secretary of State Platform for Common School System, to score high marks in the NEET rigorous coaching is needed. The students from government and government aided schools could not spare time plus resources. He later threw light on how there is no equitable access to the coaching and how this NEET would not help the deserving candidates. He explained about the situation that existed before NEET came into being. He highlighted that before NEET came into being 30 to 35 students from government schools got MBBS seats. Students belonging to government aided schools and those from rural places also got MBBS seats.
