Engineering seats for laterals to remain vacant more in numbers

It is likely that over 70 percent of the total number of B.E or B.Tech seats allotted for lateral entry students in Anna University will be vacant. This is because of the very poor response received thus far. Out of the 35,000 seats totally available across 525 colleges, hardly 12,000 applications are received, says an official report.

Completing diploma and enrolling for engineering studies was a sought-after option. However, in the recent years, the demand has largely come down because of the dip in placement opportunities.

About 40 percent of fresh Engineering graduates in 2017 were jobless, say reports.

Seeing into the flipside, there is good scope for diploma students, as the industries find diploma students being very skilled. Companies will not have to invest much towards training them or paying them!

At the same time, diploma students wish to take up job rather than opting for higher studies in Engineering.

For freshers, the salary offered in manufacturing units at Hosur are of the range Rs 12,000 to Rs 14,000. For this package, engineering students wouldn’t agree at all! With their immense skillset, diploma students will however grow on the ladder, say expert teachers.

The polytechnic college syllabus is updated to cater to the industry demands, says an official from the Directorate of Technical Education (DOTE). Half of their studies in diploma are practical sessions.

On the other hand, getting admitted in top engineering colleges after completing diploma is very tough. Students with 90 percent and above as aggregate score can only manage to get admission in government colleges.

Furthermore, in another week or 2 weeks, the counselling for lateral entry admission will take place, as per what government sources say.
