Truckloads of vegetable arrival increase - vegetable prices down by 30% to 40%

As there is a considerable increase in the number of truckloads delivering vegetables from the other states and districts to the Chennai wholesale vegetable market at Koyambedu, the traders informed that the prices of the vegetables have come down by 30% to 40%.

The truckloads of vegetables arrive daily from the Tamil Nadu regions Madurai, Ottanchathiram, Kovai, and Nilgiri, and the other neighbouring states of Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra, and Maharashtra.

As the yield of the vegetables has increased in the recent harvest, all kinds of vegetables are arriving in additional quantities by truckloads at Chennai Koyambedu wholesale vegetable market. However, during the last week, when the lorry owners had undertaken to strike work, the quantity of vegetables arriving at Koyambedu reduced by half and hence, the vegetable process shot up by 20%.

In this scenario, now, there is an increase in the number of truckloads with vegetables arriving at Koyambedu. Subsequently, the prices of the vegetables have come down by 30% to 40%.

One of the administrators of the Koyambedu wholesale vegetable traders’ association explained in this regard that the present prices of the various vegetable in Rs. per kg are as under –

Onion – 13-18, small (sambar) onion – 30-40, tomato – 14-18, broad beans – 25-30, carrot – 20-25, turnip – 30-35, radish – 20-25, brinjal – 15-20, snake gourd – 20-25, potato – 25-30, cauliflower – 20-25, ginger – 70, green chilli – 30, cabbage – 15-20, drumstick – 25-30, and bitter gourd – 30-35.
