Many motorists in TN apply for new driving licences and not renew their old ones

It is a common procedure to renew the driving licences just before the expiry date gets over. The news that has emerged out now is many motorists in Tamil Nadu who had moved out of the cities for the sake of work etc are not renewing their driving licences but are applying for fresh and new driving licences.

The reason is due to the fact that government online portal asks for genuineness cum no-objection certificate or NOC from the RTO or regional transport office that issued these motorists licence many years ago. As per the government sources it is now revealed that these motorists instead of going to their RTO in their native place are applying for the fresh or new driving licences as they find applying new licences much easier.

It is well known that licence renewal process was made online in the month of June in the year 2017. A 25 % increase in number of fresh driving licences issued across Tamil Nadu after the above mentioned date proved that motorists apply for new driving licences instead of renewing their driving licences after the expiry date.  One important point to note is more than 10 lakh driving licences have been issued to the motorists since June 2017. For a time of 20 years the driving licence is valid in India and then it must be renewed 30 days before the expiry date.

It is worthy to mention that anybody availing the state governments e-services portal for renewal would be directed to e-application portal Parivahan Sewa. The objective of this is to save paper works plus remove the need to be present physically to utilize the services regarding driving licences, registrations etc.

For driving licence renewal it is important that an amount of Rs 100 for NOC is paid and the person had to go to the original place that issued driving licence 20 years back. For renewing the licence through the Parivahan Sewa it is mandatory to get this NOC.

A consumer rights activist shared his thoughts and spoke about how it would be cumbersome for a person who had shifted to northern states to go to RTO that issued driving licences many years back. He then spoke about how the individuals apply for the fresh driving licence itself as it is much easier than going to the RTO that originally issued the driving licence 20 years back.

The consumer rights activist then explained how the government must make it easier by asking the licence renewal applicants to get NOC through email and fees could be collected online.

An official belonging to transport department spoke about how any person moving from one place to another must get their driving licences renewed for their address proof and how this was not followed.
