Engineering Counselling starts with 16,508 unfilled seats

Engineering admissions witnessed a low profile in recent four years owing to unemployment and unbalanced ratio of students-hiring companies. Many engineers from various technical backgrounds works in the field totally irrelevant to their degree courses. This lead to the reduction in many number of seats of various engineering departments and some colleges have also applied for closure this year. All India Council for Technical Education received various requests this year (2018) for the termination of certain courses and number of seats, thus resulting in the official announcement of the controlling body about the reduction of seats.
One of the official from AICTE confirmed the reduced seats were mostly dealt with the departments of Computer science and Information Technology (I.T). Students had shown more interest towards Electronics and Communication (E.C.E) and other manufacturing related departments.
Biomedical Engineering and Chemical Engineering saw an increased number of preference directly linked to the chaos of NEET for medical seats admissions. Many managements of various engineering colleges report about the percentage of students who have scored high marks in the public exams prefer to join engineering colleges with their board exam merit, as the medical admissions rely on the results of NEET that was criticized largely for its biased approach discouraging the students from South India.
Demand is directly proportional to the Students choices in the engineering concerns. Now the scenario makes it a downward spiral for the engineering courses related to information technology concerns. These kind of employment in corporate multinational companies lost its earlier buzz because of the compromising job security. So many parents and students prefer to join departments with more scope towards employment in various sectors and companies across the world.
An estimation of 1.25 lakh vacant seats is expected this year as the central government scholarship has been reduced or stopped for some categories and also the inclusion of Annamalai University engineering seats in the TNEA counselling.
State government has added 720 seats in Anna University and its sixteen constituent colleges this year. Still there is no assurance that all the 9110 seats will be filled in the university. According to the last year data only 6763 seats had been taken over from the total of 8560 seats in the university.
