Pongal fervour seems to have been down this year. Many companies and the public in Chennai which buy sugarcane in bundles for the festival have not kept upto their usual celebrations last week. Several tonnes of sugarcane are rotting in Koyambedu wholesale market. Traders and fruit vendors who have invested are now in a state of lamentation. Sources also said the business was bad in Chidambaram, Madurai, Dindigul and Thanjavur as well.
Mr. V. Dhanashekar who trades at Koyambedu said, To make profit, a bundle of sugarcane has to be sold between Rs 300 and Rs 350, but there are no takers. Some of the traders are even ready to discard the stock at throwaway prices, but there is no demand in the market.
