A team of students headed by professors from Kolkata has created an App to identify Malaria in 10 minutes under the cost of Rs. 10.

A professor of Indian origin, Manu Prakash, working at the Stanford University of the USA had created a low-priced microscope, called ‘boldscope’ in 2014. The price of the microscope was 1 $ (approximately Rs. 70 in Indian currency).

Using this microscope, a team of professors and students from Kolkata developed a new mobile App based on this microscope.

In the 1st phase, fix the microscope on the smartphone. Rub a drop of the suspect patient’s blood on the microscope.

The smartphone camera will capture a picture of the blood rubbed on the microscope and transmit it to the App.

Now, the App will check and identify whether the parasite called Plasmodium, which is the main cause of malaria is present in the blood and thus confirm the result by identifying the presence of the parasite.

The IIEST Professor Arindham explained that the team has named the App, ‘centaur’. It costs Rs. 80 to make a microscope. However, the team has decided to sell it at Rs. 10. Thus, it is possible to identify malaria at a cost of Rs. 10 in 10 minutes. The result (of the blood test through the App) will be 90% accurate.
