Chief Minister  Jayalalithaa  ordered filling up of 1,286 vacancies in Town Panchayats across the State.

Also,she has allocated Rs 72.60 crore to construct new toilets and upgrade the existing ones in City Corporations, Municipalities and Town Panchayats, in a bid to eradicate public defecation before 2015.

The Chief Minister has been sanctioning funds every year to create and maintain basic facilities such as drinking water, sewage management, sanitation, storm water drains, roads, streets, solid waste management, parking areas and parks. Various works are currently on thanks to these funds.

To carry out the works this year, Jayalalithaa has already allocated Rs 500 crore for City Corporations and Municipalities and Rs 250 crore for Town Panchayats.

It further said that the Chief Minister has ordered filling up of vacancies in local bodies, to ensure that the ongoing works are completed in time.


With an aim to eradicate public defecation before 2015,  a plan was created in 2011-12 to construct new public toilets and to provide water and electricity facilities to the existing ones.

`For this project, Rs 19.83 crore was sanctioned in the first phase and 52 consolidated sanitation complexes were constructed in 52 town panchayats. Also, 75 such complexes in 63 town panchayats were renovated,` the statement said and added that 658 facilities were renovated and 253 were newly constructed in Municipalities and City Corporations.

The release added: For 2012-13, the Chief Minister has sanctioned government subsidy of Rs 36.30 crore to create new toilets and renovate old ones in City Corporations, Municipalities and Town Panchayats. Also, she has allotted Rs 18.15 crore under the Consolidated Urban Development Scheme. And to compensate the Basic Infrastructure fund, she has allocated Rs 18.15 crore. In total, Jayalalithaa has sanctioned Rs 72.60 crore.
