The lay off by IT firms has also affected the plus-1 admission, as the demand for bio group has seen an uptick this year as compared to last year. The cut off mark for biology group is fixed as 450 this year.

The principal of a higher secondary school in Tambaram says there are 511 students studying in their school of which 415 of them have scored more than 400. All of them are passionate about joining biology group. Plus-1 is a milestone in the lives of students. The IT field slump has hit the minds of parents and students this year and the total number of students seeking biology admission has doubled up.

There are a number of options to try. Pharmacy, biotechnology and there are other budding branches where mass recruitment takes place.

There is not much investment required in the field. There are many branches in biology like biotechnology, ecology and marine biology all of which are affordable, says the principal of a school in Nanganallur.

Following biology, commerce is the next group in demand. There is no fear of getting sacked or nothing to worry about the stream. They can pursue CA and practice as independent auditors. So, students show great interest in this.
