11 Engineering colleges to be closed in Tamil Nadu

Over the last few years, there has been a gradual decline in the craze for joining engineering courses among the students. With the leading Information Technology Companies resorting to laying employees off or reducing their salaries (In order to counter the declining business environment) over the last few years.
As a result, the craze for joining engineering courses has come down gradually and considerably since the year 2011.
Consequently, the number of admissions went down in engineering colleges and correspondingly increased in Arts and Science colleges. This has pushed some of the engineering colleges to the extreme of reducing the number of seats or even to the extent of closing the college.
In the current year, it can be expected there will be a further reduction in admission for engineering colleges. AICTE has just completed the procedures and systems for extending the grant for admissions for the academic year 2017-18.
It is gathered that around 400 engineering colleges throughout India have applied to AICTE to close down their colleges.
Over 20 engineering colleges from the state of Tamil Nadu have applied to AICTE for closing down. As 11 of these colleges have applied for the grant of extension from Anna University itself, it is certain that 11 engineering colleges will be closed during the 1st Phase. So, the number of engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu will come down from 527 to 510.
In this scenario, Anna University conducted through inspection of various aspects including infrastructure in the engineering colleges and found that 44 colleges utterly lack in infrastructure facilities. It was found that the colleges sorely lacked qualified faculty, the right principal for the college, laboratory and library facilities, and a well-furnished class-room.
Anna University had taken the prompt decision to reduce the number of seats offered by these colleges.
As per this trend, the university professors observe that there are prospects that the number of seats available for admissions to engineering colleges would come down by 3000 to 5000.
An application has been received to start an engineering college in Thiruvallur. Approval has been granted by AICTE. Applications have also been made to start 3 structural engineering colleges. If approval is granted, it will confirm the entry of new colleges.
