Mums exposed to high BPA levels will produce obese child

Drinking water from plastic bottles will increase risk of having obese babies, according to a new study. The chemical called bisphenol A (BPA) which is a hormone disruptor influences a fetus’s risk of becoming obese.

When the fetus gets exposed to BPA, hormones that control appetite will become less sensitive. These results do not surprise us. It is imperative to be aware of various environmental factors that increase susceptibility of obesity.

What is BPA? This is a chemical present in food containers including that of polycarbonate plastic water bottles and linings within cans.

This BPA gets in contact with endocrine system which is a collection of varied glands producing different hormones. This mimics estrogen – key sex hormone in women. This exposure to BPA is universal. Almost 90 percent of those tested for BPA levels were seen to have detectable levels of it along with other compounds that got generated when the body is metabolized.

The Endocrine Society had conducted the study in Washington DC. They observed a baby mice. Those born to moms exposed to BPA had lesser responsiveness to hormone leptin which is sometimes the satiety hormone. This hormone called leptin will suppress hunger pangs by inhibiting appetite whenever the body does not require energy. This hormone will instruct the hypothalamus by sending signals for suppressing appetite.
