This workshop is to help enterprises proactively implement efficacious policies and redressal mechanisms to prevent sexual harassment at the workplace.

The issue of sexual harassment at the workplace is not limited only to large organizations but to all forms of enterprises in the public and private sector, non-governmental organizations, academic institutions and the like. Reports indicate that over 90% of Fortune 500 companies have at some point dealt with a complaint of sexual harassment and that more than a third of them have faced lawsuits related to this issue. Companies and institutions are liable for sexual harassment that occurs in the workplace irrespective of whether or not they were aware of its occurrence. Sexual harassment extends to both genders, is prevalent in supervisor-subordinate relationships, among peers and includes third parties as well. Third parties include non-employees such as clients, contractors, vendors, students, parents and external staff and suppliers. Sexual harassment can manifest in various forms – verbal, gestural, or visual. It also extends to legitimate complaints by employees who are not directly impacted by harassing behavior at work, but are subject to observing or being exposed to implicit or explicit conduct of a sexual nature in the workplace.

The consequences of sexual harassment at the workplace can be far-reaching and can have severe negative impact on employees and organizations. With safety and comfort being an issue, work productivity, physical, psychological and mental wellbeing will be hampered. It is vital for organizations to recognize and take cognizance of the prevalent issue of sexual harassment at the workplace, train employees and ensure they have a solid understanding of the issue and the forms it can take, constitute an internal complaints committee, conduct internal investigations and take stringent and appropriate action against offenders.

This workshop will address and provide a detailed overview on:
  • What constitutes as sexual harassment at the workplace;
  • The law governing sexual harassment in India;
  • The need for a stringent code of conduct and ethics and strict enforcement;
  • Appropriately handling sexual harassment issues and complaints through redressal mechanisms.
