Facebook makes official launch of Express Wi-Fi in India

Posted on: 28/Nov/2016 5:43:56 PM
Aiming to make internet available to the underprivileged, the social media company Facebook has made the official launch of Express Wi-Fi in India. This has turned live in over 125 rural areas in India. To note, there had been earlier attempts to launch Free Basics in the country which got failed due to net neutrality.

In his note about this, a Facebook spokesperson said, the social networking giant is working together with ISP and operator partners in order to check Express Wi-Fi with public Wi-Fi deployments in a number of pilot sites. All ISPs, operators, and local entrepreneur retailers are to get empowered with this for quality internet access at villages, towns and other regions.

At the same time, there is no hint on the accessibility to all sites – whether the Wi-Fi service will provide access to all websites or select sites that are Facebook affiliated like what it did with its Free Basics.

Apart from this, there are other similar initiatives taken to provide free internet access to remote areas of the world using solar electricity powered drone, Aquila.

Facebook is set to make use of Aquila for providing internet connection to over 4 million underprivileged people who are present in remote areas of the world.
