Universities developing flood forecasting system

Posted on: 10/Nov/2016 9:56:34 AM
IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru and Anna University are developing a first-of-its kind system for flood forecasting and management. The project, funded by the Centre, is being supervised by the office of the principal scientific advisor as well as the ministries of urban development, earth sciences and water resources.

A source from the Anna University says, Following the huge damage caused by the floods last year, we felt that there was a pressing need to design a specific system for flood forecasting and possible means of its management through appropriate interventions. The design of the system comprised four sub components: Development of near real-time flood forecasting system along with visualisation, flood monitoring with sensors, understanding suitability of drainage networks and scope of improvements and development of a system for flood inundation forecasting.

A project coordinator from IIT Bombay said, There was no such system in the country which combines different steps of forecasting in one model. The forecast model will combine atmospheric, tidal and flood forecast models.
