Get E-coli free drinking water in just 30 minutes

It will take hardly thirty minutes to get e-coli free drinking water - Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru researchers are to be thanked.
E-coli are the main causative agent for water-borne bacterial infections. The conventional methods of getting rid of e-coli make use of UV light. It rips apart the pathogenic bacteria. The method is often expensive and the process is more sophisticated. Researchers from IISc have discovered a new method of getting rid of e-coli bacteria. In this process, they synthesize zinc oxide photo catalyst to absorb both UV as well as visible light that kills bacteria.
Prof. Giridhar Madras from Department of Chemical Engineering, IISc stated that their research team analyzed e-coli. The catalyst they developed can kill harmful bacteria, he added.
The uniqueness of the catalyst they have developed is that it contains both metal and non-metal which makes it absorbent of both visible as well as UV light. This makes the catalyst even more efficient that other types used in convention.
About 40 percent of electromagnetic spectrum comprises of visible light and 4 percent of UV rays are present. Both these components are absorbed by the catalyst. It generates free radicals to kill bacteria. Sunlight naturally has such catalyst and it can kill over 10 million bacterial present in water in just 60 minutes.
