TRAI to bring out app to measure internet speed

Posted on: 04/Jul/2016 11:25:22 AM
Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, or TRAI, has announced that it will launch a mobile application which will help a consumer to measure internet speed on his smartphone and send results to the authority.

In an official statement, TRAI said, The MySpeed app, which could be downloaded from the mobile sewa app store, allows users to measure their data speed experience and send the results to this, i.e. the TRAI Analytics Portal. The portal and the application will be formally launched by the regulator on July 5. The application will also send coverage, data speed and network information along with device and location of the customer.

The minimum internet speed that should be delivered to customers has also been defined. In spite of this, many have complained of poor speed. During a test drive, TRAI found that 3G customers of some operators were getting 2G internet speed most of the time in select cities.

Nasscom has said that TRAI should give complete flexibility to apps and websites for deciding on provisions for rewarding free data to customers. The IT industry body was responding to a consultation paper of TRAI’s that spoke about free data for telecom customers.  Reports say that Nasscom also said that operators should not have direct or indirect influence on the content that customers view on the Internet.
