Southern Railway to install CCTV Cameras in Chennai Railway Stations at the cost of Rs. 62 Crores

With the recent gruesome murder of the female techie (Infosys) Swathi at Nungambakkam Railway Station, Indian Railways is now seriously considering in improving safety measures, especially for women passengers.

It is gathered that Railways were greatly disturbed by the gruesome murder and the Ministry of Railways has asked for an immediate report from the Southern Railway officials on enforcing better vigilance and monitoring in all Chennai Metro City Railway Stations

News is gathered that a report has been sent to the Ministry of Railways including the list of places for installation of CCTV cameras in the Railway Stations and that more than 140 CCTV cameras would be required to be installed in the stations crowded with passengers such as Basin Bridge, Egmore, Central, Mambalam, Tambaram,Mylapore, and Thiruvallur,.

The Ministry of Railways has immediately allocated funds of Rs. 62 Crores for the implementation. The project of installing CCTV cameras will commence in 80 railway stations belonging to the Chennai Metro city and including Ambur and Jolarpettai.

The vigilance and monitoring will be beefed up in some stations notorious for criminal acts such as Korrukkupettai and Washermanpet where most trains do not stop.

A staff of the Railway protection force explained that the police are currently not in position to keep monitoring railway stations. A team of 4 police staff headed by RPF inspector has been formed to carry out sudden random inspections in the Railway stations between Chetput and Tambaram Sanatorium.

This team can carry inspection at any time throughout the 24 hours. 

Further, all facilities should be made available to enable reach the spot of the crime immediately. If self-initiated tams join with the protection force, it will help greatly to bring down criminal activities.
