The bridge that crosses the Cooum river at Amjikarai on Poonamallee High Road will be completed by December. The bridge will cost Rs. 8 crore. According to reports, one span of the three-lane wide bridge has been completed and two more are under way.

Officials from the Highways Department say, On completion of this set of three-lanes on the other side, it will aid better movement of traffic. At present, the traffic plies on an old three-lane composite girder bridge, and on another three-lane bridge constructed recently on the Ampa Skywalk mall side. Once the remaining work of the Anna Arch flyover is completed, the new bridge would be a welcome addition. The proposal was to construct two L-shaped flyovers at the junction of Poonamallee High Road and Anna Nagar Third Avenue at a cost of Rs. 117-crore. The flyover from Poonamallee High Road to Nelson Manickam Road was thrown open to traffic a few months ago. The other one is expected to be completed by September.

Encroachments on the sides of the road are being removed in a phased manner. Speaking about this, a resident from Anna Nagar said, Shops, especially in the Aminjikarai market area, encroach upon footpaths, forcing pedestrians to walk on the road. In some places, there are no footpaths as buildings are occupying road space. If they are also removed, it would help in better movement of traffic.
