Himalayan Traffic problems encountered in Perungalathur Overbridge Project

Posted on: 22/Jun/2016 5:28:02 PM
The Perungalathur Railway overbridge project has been progressing dead slow.

The public and the local residents have been put to great hardships.

The people risk their lives and cross railway tracks.

There are 2 routes in Perungalathur Railway Station area. One of them, SC-32, leading to the office of the local city administration, was closed last July (2015) for overbridge construction. So, only the se4cond route, SC-33, is the only available route for all vehicles and pedestrians.

Thousands of people commute through this route by trains and buses to schools, colleges, and offices. So, heavy traffic is encountering most of the time in this route. Even this route gets closed whenever the electric trains or the southern districts trains to cross. During these periods, the heavy traffic comes virtually to a standstill.

This hardship has been prevailing since the last 11 months. Every time a train crosses, the level-crossing gates are closed for 20 to 25 minutes. As the only route available is also closed, the people, especially, school-going children, in their hurry, take the risk of crossing the tracks.

Apart from the school children, it is a common sight to see even the office-goers rushing on the tracks. On another side, the vehicles which are kept waiting try to rush out the moment the gates are opened. So, there are frequent fights and scraps.

Even as the level-crossing gates are closed, people try to push their vehicles under the gate and try to cross.A person has been appointed to prevent this. This is the only route available to move from GST Road to the interior area of Perungalathur.

The vehicle owners take the route to cross the signal at the GST Perungalathur Bus Terminus and take the one-way route to this route. (SC-33).In turn, the traffic is heavy in the GST Road as well.
Nobody yet seems to appreciate this hardship faced by thousands of public in this area.

The main evidence is the speed of the work on the Railway overbridge construction. Over the last months, only the support pillars have been constructed. Though the pillars are constructed in the railway area, the Highways department has yet to start their work. The public has despaired as to when this will be over.

There is a bus stop shelter in the GST Road to Tambaram in a bus stop not in use. This has proved to be an obstacle in widening of the road. In fact, this leads to more traffic jams. Apart from this, all social evils, including alcoholic drinking and others are taking place in this bus shelter. It is thus an emergency to remove this shelter and widen this road to reduce the hardship of thousands of people.
