Amendment in Legislation: No more election for city mayors

Posted on: 22/Jun/2016 3:04:54 PM

In the current system, it has been the practice to elect mayors for all cities in the state of Tamil Nadu including the Chennai Metro City through a special election.

However, today (Wednesday, 22nd June), the Legislative Assembly passed an Amendment to bring about a change in the system of electing the mayor despite strong protests from the opposition.

With this recent amendment, the mayors for all the cities in Tamil Nadu will be elected by the Members of the Legislative Assembly.

The state Home Minister Velumani proposed the draft for the amendment in the Legislative Assembly today.

The new system will preclude the need to conduct a separate election for the mayors.

DMK’s MLA from Saidapet Constituency, M Subramanian protested from the start about this amendment and opposed it.

However, the Assembly Speaker Dhanapal allowed the voice voting to accept the draft proposal for amendment.

The draft was taken up and was passed by voice votes.

The approval by the legislative Assembly for this amendment is expected tomorrow (Thursday, 23rd  June).
