Southern Railway Mazdoor Union General Secretary  Kanniah has mentioned that Foreign Direct Investment and privatization in sectors like the railways would result in increase in freight/passenger fares and eliminate job guarantee besides leading to scrapping of communal reservation.

The national Joint Action Council representing about 40 lakh employees working in postal, defense, railway and other central government departments has called for a general strike on 11th July.

Scrapping of new pension system, addressing wage disparities and giving up privatization of railways and other PSUs are among their charter of 36 demands.

At this juncture, a meeting was held in Chennai Central in connection with the forthcoming strike. More than 500 railway employees participated in this meeting.

SRMU General Secretary Kanniah while speaking on this occasion said: The Union Government should remove the disparities of the 7th Pay Commission. The minimum pay should be fixed at Rs 26000. Scrapping of new pension system, addressing wage disparities and giving up privatization of railways and other PSUs are among their charter of 36 demands. We will be going on indefinite strike from 11th July. The Union Government is planning to privatize railways. We are vehemently condemning this. Privatization in sectors like the railways would result in increase in freight/passenger fares. The subsidies which we are getting will be cancelled. The poor and middle income people will be affected very much.
