Drinking very hot beverages may be cancerous, says WHO

Posted on: 18/Jun/2016 9:54:42 AM
Cancer research conducted by the World Health Organisation, or the WHO, has said that drinking very hot beverages can cause cancer of the oesophagus.

23 international scientists worked on the research. They were convened by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, or the IARC. The scientists have said that drinking coffee, tea and other very hot beverages can be carcinogenic if the temperature is over 65 degrees Celsius. Epidemiological studies conducted by the team of international researchers showed positive associations between cancer of the oesophagus and drinking very hot beverages.

However, the scientists did not find any conclusive evidence for carcinogenic effects of drinking coffee or mate, which is a South American caffeine rich drink, at temperatures that are not very hot. Both had been classified as possibly carcinogenic to humans since 1991, when the last evaluation was done.
