Survey shows online usage trends by teenagers

A recent survey conducted by TCS has said that India is riding on the digital wave of innovation and teenagers top the list when it comes to social networks and gadgets. Previous reports have indicated that teens have a much higher social presence than among all other age groups.

The current survey has said that teens in India prefer PCs and laptops to browse, when having to choose between them and smartphones. The survey was targeted at students from the 8 Std. to the 12 Std. 

According to the survey, Technology has transformed young India. The gadgets considered as luxuries earlier have swiftly become necessities making an impact on both their student and personal lives. The survey was undertaken to get a pulse of the digital habits of school students from class 8-12. Desktops, home PCs and laptops are the most popular methods of accessing the internet (44 per cent), which is just one per cent more than the smartphone count.

The report said that 26 per cent of the respondents spend at least an hour everyday online, while 27 per cent  respond to notifications within 5 minutes of receiving them. 

When asked about social media, Facebook came out in the lead in terms of usage with 86 per cent. This was followed by Google+ with 65 per cent. The survey also found that boys are more active online generally, and also on social media, than girls. 49 per cent of the respondents said that their parents monitor their online activities. 48 per cent said that their parents have access to their online accounts.

The survey says that teenagers are moving away from organised learning environments. They seem to be leaning more towards online learning. This indicates the popularity of do it yourself, or DIY, and collaborative learning is gaining. 

With reference to the usage of video chats, 21 per cent of the respondents say that they use video chat to learn a new hobby. This is followed by school assignments with 20.5 per cent and educational tutorials with 15 per cent.

WhatsApp was rated as the most popular instant messaging platform with 71 per cent, distantly followed by SMS with 12 per cent. 40 per cent said that their preferred way of communication with friends was face to face. 

87 per cent of the teenagers said that they shop online. 57 per cent bought electronic gadgets, 50 per cent bought books and 37 per cent bought clothes. 

79 per cent of the respondents prefer TV and newspapers to get their daily dose of news. This was followed by links from friends or family on Facebook with 38 per cent and online sources with 34 per cent.
