New traffic rules in and around Chennai Central with effect from June 15

Posted on: 11/Jun/2016 2:18:48 PM
From June 15, the Southern railways will effect changes to the pattern of road traffic movement in and around Chennai Central station. This will be done in consultation with the State agencies. As per the plan, commercial vehicles will be let in only through the Moore Market Complex side. The entry point will be near the Railway Protection Force (RPF) outpost and the two-wheeler parking lot. The officials have earmarked a separate space for pick up and drop of passengers. Also, the area lying vacant after the parking contract ended last year will provide adequate parking facility. The MMC entry will be used by passengers who use taxis.

The reason given for this plan to to ease traffic congestion in the main portico area of the station and to aid smooth flow of traffic on the Poonamallee High Road during peak hours.

In an official statement, Southern Railways said, Passengers have been requested to take note of the revised traffic arrangements and extend their cooperation to the railway. This move is aimed at streamlining vehicular traffic after passengers routinely complained of delays in exiting Chennai Central.
