Centre releases more dal to Tamil Nadu to control pulses prices

Posted on: 08/Jun/2016 3:05:33 PM
In a bid to control pulses prices which are inching close to Rs 200/kg, the Centre has released 2023 tonnes of tur dal and 1000 tonnes of urad dal from its buffer stock for retail sale at subsidized rate of Rs 120/kg in Tamil Nadu.

India is the world’s largest producer of pulses, but its domestic demand outstrips production. The shortfall is met through imports.

At an inter-ministerial meeting here on Tuesday, it was pointed out that only Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Telangana had sought allocations from the buffer stock for which the Centre had procured 1.11 lakh tonnes of pulses so far.

Consumer Affairs Secretary Hem Pande has mentioned: The State Governments have been urged repeatedly to seek allocation of pulses from the buffer stock to sell at reasonable prices which should not be more than Rs 120 per kg.
