Anna University decision: Not to release merit list of engineering colleges

Posted on: 08/Jun/2016 8:13:28 AM
The officials of Anna University have informed that the merit list of the engineering colleges will not be released during this year.

Anna University had released the merit list of the engineering colleges for the years 2014 and 2015. However, it has decided not to release the same this year (2016). This news has shocked the students and their parents.

It is an interesting news that the state of Tamil Nadu is top in the number of engineering colleges - there are 527 engineering colleges as per the statistics released for the academic year 2016-17. No other state has these many engineering colleges.

The state of Maharashtra comes next with 372 engineering colleges. Andhra has 328. Uttar Pradesh has 296. Telengana has 294. Madhya Pradesh has 211. There are less than 200 engineering colleges in the other states.

As there are so many engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu, it becomes a rather difficult ordeal in decision making to select a high-quality engineering college.

On the other side, there is an increasing trend of donation payment of several Lakhs of Rupees to get admission in reputed engineering colleges – while the promise is given for 100 percent employment, the recruits are sent back after 6 months of work.

The professors of Anna University suggest various measures to avoid this defrauding by the engineering colleges – Making a personal visit to the college and analyzing, reading the details of the college and its faculty on the internet, enquiring about the institute with the old students of the college are some of the measures to be taken seriously and then only a decision should be taken.

One of the measures suggested is the merit list of the engineering colleges based on the percentage of success of the students.

Anna University released this merit list during the years 2014 and 2015 as per the orders of the High Court. This proved to be hugely popular. The students and parents gave the feedback that it was indeed useful to ascertain the quality of the engineering college.

It was eagerly expected that the merit list of the engineering colleges based on the percentage pass of the students would be released this year (2016) as well.

However, Anna University authorities have now informed that this merit list will not be released this year.

When enquired about the reasons for the hesitation to release the merit list of engineering colleges, the examination regulation board officials informed that the merit list for 2014 and 2015 was released only because of the high court order.

However, this year the details of percentage success will not be released.

The academicians and the professors in the state are now raising the question why there is hesitation on the part of Anna University to release the details of percentage success of the students and the merit list of the engineering colleges.
